Can we envision the creation of new aesthetics that go beyond traditional capitalist agendas? Can we redream new forms of representation? Conceiving new possible futures against those who attempt to constrain our imagination is critical amid the world’s rapidly developing polycrisis. With a forward-looking ethos in mind, MANY OF THEM #12 embraces the concept of redreaming, a notion explored by Nigerian poet and novelist BEN OKRI, which refers to the act of reactivating our capacity to dream alternative futures and images yet to be seen. In a cultural landscape overwhelmed by the incessant flood of pictures, algorithmic surveillance, copy-paste media creation processes, and the commodification of desire, redreaming new futures becomes a catalyst for change, allowing for a radical reawakening. As OKRI tells HANS ULRICH OBRIST, “We are still primitives to the powers of dreaming and redreaming our possibilities as a species”—we have yet to fully embrace our multidimensionality. Redreaming is a political and ontological repositioning that invites us to question the forms through which reality has been historically constructed, constrained, and represented. The artists and thinkers in this issue propose shifting the terms of understanding, unpacking our shared fears about the future, and bringing poetry to the activist site. Across disparate media and from wildly different backgrounds—whether looking within or looking without—they propose an awe-inspiring range of ways to redream what comes next. This is not an escape, but a reconstruction. We must look at the world with new eyes. Instead, he demands we should enter into a murkier, fugitive state. Inspired by his vision, this concept guides Issue #11 of MANY OF THEM, leading us to explore new undetermined spaces and images that deny exactitude and that refuse to pin embodiment to instantly recognizable shapes. During a time when, especially in popular culture, visibility is often misunderstood as participation but in reality constitutes an exploitative condition, MANY OF THEM envisions silence and invisibility as a much more threatening and interesting position to take up. Infinite images result from trying to encapsulate this notion: the hybrid, the interspecies, the blur, the fantasy, the dream. Its exploration takes up a variety of themes around image-making, character-building, labor, AI, artistry, and the everyday that demonstrate that to be capable of radical change requires refusing to be perfectly accounted for by existing languages or images. The opaque and the obscure are the provisional and the not-yet-arrived. As the artist PIPPA GARNER declares of our collective future, “Life on Earth won’t be called human, it will probably have a new name.” In this way, the illegibility becomes an opportunity to reroute habitual thinking or form a window onto awe-inspiring and imminent patterns of reality. With diverse yet like-minded voices and images, Issue #9 of MANY OF THEM introduces this notion as a shared feeling after a recent time of collective separation. The ellipse in the sentence—representing a pause, or suggesting there's something left unsaid—may well serve as the necessary space kept empty so that the desire to gather can find its way through the new emerging world. The longing to be together takes a variety of forms, as stated by thinker and author SASKIA SASSEN: “The simplest and, to me, most attractive way, both simple and attractive, is to say that togetherness comes in many different shapes and molds.” In its simplicity, this concept conjures up an idea of solidarity and unity as a vital need, rather than an ideological choice. Togetherness as a form of coming-together that all contributors to this issue are seeking to reimagine. But these are not innocent gestures; the contributors to Issue #8 of MANY OF THEM are well aware of the ideological, economic, and political implications of advanced technologies and their position in the world. The question that we pose on the cover of the current issue—which arises from a reflection by the poet ETEL ADNAN, cited by HANS ULRICH OBRIST in our conversation with him—is answered, indirectly, by the contributors to the magazine through their world-making practices, whether by building bridges between a furniture piece and a sculpture, between a sculpture and a handbag, between the digital and the analog, or between the hand and the machine. In sum, they all point to the connection between art and technology as a relationship that is always rewritten in the present.
