“THIS ISSUE IS THE RESULT OF DAILY PHOTO SHOOTS ON THE SAME STREET OF PARIS FROM 15 MAY 2018 TO 15 JULY 2018. THANK YOU TO ALL THE COTRIBUTORS FOR PLAYING A PART IN THE WRITING OF THIS LOVE LETTER TO THE CITY AND ITS CITIZENS.”

In issue #6 of MANY OF THEM, legendary designer ANDRE WALKER reviews the unexpected refurbishing of his Non-Existant Pattern archive, and ponders why the fashion industry needs to recover a little bit from itself. One of the edgiest duos in fashion, MIKE ECKHAUS and ZOE LATTA, from ECKHAUS LATTA, talk about the New York fashion scene and why they try to distance themselves from being labelled as political activists. From his studio in Alxandria, Virginia, artist MARK JENKINS is vocal about the process of making his hyper-realistic sculptures and examines his last collaboration with BALENCIAGA’s DENMA GVASALIA, where conventional window display mannequins were replaced by his artwork. “In the past, the high street was not fashion, and now it copies fashion at such a fast rate that it is scary,” declares Belgium designer DRIES VAN NOTEN as he reflects on the transformation of the fashion industry over time and describes how living and working in Antwerp keeps him one step away from everything but still a part of it all. The forces behind ÉTUDES describe how they understand the brand as a collective and delve into their collaboration with artist DICK BLAIR, through which they transformed his artwork Untitled, 1992 into a print for their Fall-Winter 2017 collection. On an early morning call from New York, BYREDO’s creative director BEN GORHAM expands on imagining and creating scent by sharing the process of their first collaborative project with VIRGIL ABLOH, Elevator Music, launched in Paris alongside artist CARSTEN HÖLLER’s installation. When she realised the knitting industry in the USA was practically non-existing, designer LAUREN MANOOGIAN explains how she came to find Peruvian craftsmanship as the model for her business in terms of scale and practice. MANOOGIAN further displays how the process of building her collections begins with the exploration of materials. Reflecting on the identity of Brazilian fashion, designer LÍVIA CAMPOS, from BEIRA, elaborates on an ethos of closeness over the impersonal, and explains why making a collection is very similar to developing any other industrial product. After re-launching his eponymous brand, OLIVIER THEYSKENS ponders the invisibility of his work on the pre-Internet era and details the process of exploring and reclassifying the entirety of his archive for his MOMU exhibition in Antwerp, She Walks in Beauty. The love for old Hollywood stories drives JAMES FRANCO to reflect on The Disaster Artist, his latest film based on The Room, TOMMY WISEAU’s cult-movie, considered by the industry as the worst film ever made. “Movies have always been about the forbidden, whether they are Hollywood or independent films, and to ignore that long history is kind of a narrow vision,” quotes TODD HAYNES while discussing his latest project Wonderstruck, a film based on a BRIAN SELZNICK’s novel that explores deaf culture as a political act, and goes on to chart the emergence of New Queer Cinema after the AIDS epidemic in 1991. German director WIM WENDERS explores the hadal zone of the ocean in his latest film Submergence based on a J.M. LEGARD novel, and meditates on how Brexit stole young people’s future from right under their feet. Closing the issue, Swedish filmmaker RUBEN ÖSTLUND mulls over his Palme d’Or-winning film, The Square, and reflects on the social psychology of the bystander effect.
